What is the format of the older back ups that still play?Your drive is actually an oem LiteOn SOHW-1633S so if you are using +R you could booktype them to DBD-Rom to increase compatability.Nero not being able to give the manufacturer info means more than likely that even though you have the latest firmware the media code for the manufacturer of the Memorex is not listed.
